A black version of the Barbie doll is to go on sale in Britain for the first time in almost 30 years in a move that beauty experts have put down to the “Michelle Obama effect”.

A new range of black and mixed-race figures with “fuller lips, a wider nose, more distinctive cheek bones and curlier hair” will appear in UK shops from next Easter, according to manufacturer Mattel. The company said it wanted to ensure Barbie remained “culturally relevant”.
