Mums don't get sick days!

Once you have a child, even if you are ill, you simply can’t feel ill. Mums don’t get sick days!

Over the summer, we have managed to avoid any bugs, however the weather is getting colder and this weekend I got a bad cough/cold and lost my voice. Today I felt terrible and forlornly waved my husband off to work this morning as usual, dreading the day ahead. If I worked in an office, I would have taken the day off sick.

All I wanted to do was crawl under the duvet, but my two year old had other ideas involving trying to use up all my energy, which included messing up every room in the house and writing all over herself in pen. I tried to carry on as normal and went to the park for a while (the idea being she was better outside instead of inside surrounded by germs), then thankfully lay on the sofa whilst she slept for an hour. However, as the day progressed, my patience was at zero. I’m sure she realised as she was being especially demanding, even for a two year old. I tried to explain repeatedly I felt rubbish and could she try not to whinge (funnily enough, to no avail).

I’m a strong believer in keeping TV-watching to a minimum, but in the end put on all the Peppa Pig episodes we had saved in Sky Plus, so I could lie on the sofa and die quietly, waiting until my husband came home to take over!

The worst scenario is if you and your child are ill but so far she (and my husband) has escaped the bug this time around. I have been dosing her up on vitamins and washing my hands like I have OCD. BUT I slipped up. She had a drink from my water-bottle, no doubt a germ breeding-ground. Then I blew on her food to cool it down, spreading more nasty germs everywhere. I realised too late. So we will see over the next few days. At least I should be better.

This will probably be the first of many bugs over the winter period, picked up on the most part at her nursery, and then passing them from her to me to him and back again! I just hope none of the bugs she catches will be swine-flu.
