The Strange Kids Entertainer

My 2 yr old was invited to a friend’s birthday party not so long ago. It was on a Sunday so I dragged my husband along. We had been to a charity party the night before and were both feeling slightly worse for wear. I  certainly didn’t feel I could face 15 toddlers on a sugar rush on my own. After some playing, food and birthday cake, it was time for the entertainer. We all moved upstairs (my foggy brain was grateful I could sit quietly and not have to make small talk).

The entertainer was called Mini (she was a stand-in for the original one booked). Mini was a strange-looking, short and dumpy woman, dressed in leprechaun green, with plaits in her hair. She had the squeakiest voice I have ever heard and was a little on the freaky side. I could imagine all the children having nightmares that night. They initially sat in complete silence, staring at her, very definitely bewildered. For the next hour she performed a slap-stick routine, with wooden puppets, accordians, and all sorts of very strange props. Her squeaky voice was like a drill. Her piece de resistance was making giant bubbles (which she didn’t do very well) and it was a relief once she finished.

By the end the children had actually started to warm to her and I actually felt a bit sorry for her. She was a bit like a character out of Fawlty Towers and was definitely the strangest kids entertainer I have ever seen.
