Me, the 2 year old, a cup and a saucer

by 21stcenturymummy on August 25, 2010

My 2 year old and I went to The Pottery Cafe in Fulham, as I had the bright idea of us decorating a coffee cup for her Daddy’s birthday. I did some mugs with her feet on when she was a baby, and My, weren’t the grandparents happy! You can pick anything from teapots to piggy banks. They are plain and ready to be decorated. You pick your colours and sponges, and off you go.

The problem is I like things to be colour co-ordinated and in a nice pattern. Even a tea cup. OCD Alert! I’m not sure neatness and order is possible with a 2 year old, let alone one with a set of paint.

First she picked the colours – pink, blue, purple, orange and….GREEN. “No no no, not green, it doesn’t go”, the ‘OCDness’ in me cried. Then she picked her sponges – stars, splodges and a giraffe.

Taking a few deep breaths, and thinking “I can let her have a free reign”, we were off.  It almost worked.

As you can see, I let her go to town, with spots and splodges and stars. She drew a snake on the saucer and a jellyfish on the side of the cup.

And it still looks pretty too.

As for the green, it’s there, but it got relegated to the bottom of the saucer.

We had so much fun (me, probably even more than her). Know her Daddy will love it.

I’m probably a bad mummy for not giving her a free reign. What would you do?

I think you did the right thing. We picked up mugs from a pottery cafe on Webbs Road, SW11 (the brilliant Sammy Duder) and I wish we’d exercised more parental control! Great handprint platter, though.

they look great! No way your a bad mum – you were setting the boundaries. I assume you let her have full reign on paper so there!
Good activity for my almost 2 year old.
