Gro-Clock Sleep Trainer

RRP £29.99, currently £20.25 on Amazon

Following our disastrous experience of the Monkey Sleep Trainer (see my review here), I did some research and decided to buy the Gro-Clock Sleep Trainer to try to keep my 3 year old in her room a little longer.

They Say:

This updated version of the Gro-clock uses fun images of the stars and sun to communicate when to go back to sleep and when it’s time to get up. Due to popular request, this 2010 version of the Gro-Clock has a new feature allowing parents to choose whether or not to display the digital clock during the usual ‘stars to sun’ countdown. So for older children, they can now start to learn digital time, as well as look for the arrival of the sun! The Gro-clock also comes with a story book which helps to encourage children to stay in bed longer, which means more sleep for them and more sleep for you!

We say:

After a slow start – it’s quite complicated to set up (and I still need to keep referring to the instructions), I set the clock up next to my 3 year old’s bed. At night, there is a blue screen with a big star surrounded by little stars. The stars go out one by one until the time you set the alarm and then the screen changes slowly to a yellow sun. I explained and showed her (using the demo) what would happen and that she could come into our room when the sun came up. I set the alarm for 7.15am. The next morning, despite hearing her talking, she stayed in her room. At 7.15 I her heard say “The sun’s up, can I come in now?” The result: Two happy parents.

We had one blip when my daughter said she didn’t want it in her room. I honestly thought it was going to have to go back, but managed to persuade her the next night to keep it in. Now, each morning she comes into our room once the sun is visible.

I fully expected to be returning the Gro-Clock Sleep Trainer, just like the sleep clock we bought. But I’m happy to say we’re keeping it. And I would definitely recommend it to parents with early risers.

Rating: 4/5

Technical details:

  • Glowing screen shows images of stars and sun to communicate sleep and wake up time to children
  • Stars go out one by one during the night to show the passing of time
  • Key lock option
  • Adjustable screen brightness
  • Option to set two different wake-up times night time and day time nap modes

We have the Gro clock and I agree it’s fab. We’ve had it for a year or so. I like the changes you have talked about like the digital clock, the adjustable brightness and the key lock. These have been my 3 biggest problems.
I didn’t want the little one to have a night light. I wanted her to be ok in the dark. I have accepted it but not happy.
My little girl is very button savvy so being able to lock them is fab and then finally if I have to be in her room at night I would like to know the actual time!

I didn’t want mine to have a night light and she didn’t have anything until she was 2, then she went through a phase of waking up, so I added a night light in the hallway, which seemed to sort out the problem – that and leaving the door wideopen.

Recently we stopped the nightlight because the bulb broke. She started getting night terrors and waking up 5 times a night wanting something. So now the door has to be wide open, the gro-clock on and the landing light too (until we get the bulb fixed)! Not quite the plan but she’s stopped waking during the night.

I have a night light and my son likes it. Because it is low down it does not affect his sleep. We also leave the door open so he feels secure. As for early wakings and the pitter patter of feet into our room – we love the early cuddles.
