This was a conversation I had with a Kiwi friend yesterday, I will call her S.

Baby C is the same age as her daughter and we were discussing their eating habits.

Me: “Baby C is being really fussy at the moment, she is completely off her food.”

S: “Baby E’s favourite dish is Beef and Bear Casserole, you should try it.”

Me, somewhat puzzled: “Beef and Bear Casserole?”

S: “Yes, Beef and Bear Casserole, it’s delicious.”

Me, somewhat stupefied: “Bear?”

S: “Yes, Bear, Baby E loves it.”

Me, very confused now (and trying to think what else she could be talking about other than the brown grizzly variety): “Bear, what’s bear?”

S, giving me a very strange look: “Uh. the supermarket. You know the stuff you drink.”

Me, as I finally twigged: “Ohhhh, you mean beer!”

S, still not understanding: “Yes, Bear!”

Just because you speak the same language, it doesn’t mean you’ll understand each other.

Do you have any funny stories where you’ve completely misunderstood someone like this?
