Review: SANTA CLAUS: The Musical

Santa Claus is coming to town

I’ve been feeling particularly un-Christmassy this year so I’ve been doing everything I can this week to get me into the Christmas spirit. Things like playing Christmas tunes; making reindeer out of paper plates; and making paper snowflakes with Miss C. When we got the chance to go to SANTA CLAUS: The Musical at Marina Bay Sands last night, it seemed like the perfect way to get me into a festive mood.

It was the perfect opportunity for Miss C and I (armed with Santa deely boppers our heads – her idea not mine) to spend some Mummy and Me time together too. So, thanks to Base Entertainment Asia for tickets.

They say: From the producers of Annie comes SANTA CLAUS: The Musical, a delightful Christmas adventure sure to warm everyone’s heart. This heart-warming musical tells the story of Santa Claus and his chief Elf, Joe, trying to stop the Ice Queen and her faithful henchman Jack Frost from cancelling Christmas around the world. As the battle between good and evil unfolds in the toy factory at Lapland, it’s up to Santa Claus and Joe to fight to save Christmas for all of mankind. The show features music from the festive season including Jingle Bells, Santa Claus is coming to town, Let it Snow and Rockin’ around the Christmas Tree.

We say: A show full of Christmas songs to get the audience smiling, clapping and singing. Throw Santa, Rudolph and the reindeers, the Ice Queen, a few Jamaican-sounding crows, some penguins and polar bears into the mix and you’ve got a recipe for a fun-filled, feel-good show that children will love, although I did find it a bit slow in parts. The set design and costumers were superb and the cast did a great job. It will make a great family outing this Christmas, but it is a 2 1/2 hour show so I was very surprised how young some of the children were. It’s probably more suited for 3  year olds and up.  Miss C, who’s five, absolutely loved it and has been on my case to meet the actress who plays the young girl ever since.

We give it: 4/5. It certainly got me in the Christmas spirit (I would have loved even more Christmas songs).

SANTA CLAUS: The Musical is on from now until 30 December 2010. For more information, click here or call +65 6688 8826. Tickets are also on sale through Sistic.
