Barbie Birthday Cake: Fit For A Princess

by 21stcenturymummy on August 10, 2010

Hi-5 to this fabulous Barbie birthday cake which we saw at a 4 year old’s “Princess-themed” birthday last week. The girls were dressed as princesses as was Addy, the Twizzle entertainer.

It looked like it could have been made by a cake designer, but was actually from Waitrose and cost £50. The birthday cake includes a Barbie doll and tasted delicious. It is made of vanilla sponge, with raspberry jam and buttercream, and is covered with soft icing (can be personalised too).

You can order it online using the Waitrose Deliver service.

Coffee and Crayons, Fulham – superb children's party venue

With my daughter’s second birthday fast approaching I booked Coffee and Crayons on the Fulham Road, SW London. The thought of having ten or more children and their parents at our house made me quake with fear, and I decided a picnic would be too much of a gamble because of the weather in September (as it was, it was a hot and sunny day!).

Coffee and Crayons is a lovely little cafe with a good-sized basement room featuring a play area and lots of comfy sofas. Midweek it is normally bursting at the seems with mums and their children.

The Coffee and Crayons party package was £170 for up to ten children for a two hour session, with adults free. It included food and drink for the children, and two party co-ordinators. You could bring wine/beer/champagne but corkage was extra (£3 for a bottle of wine) and so was food for the adults.

I was very impressed with everything from the organisation to the helpfulness of the staff on the day. We had about 30 guests and there was plenty of space. A ‘Happy Birthday Isabella’ banner was hung in the room, which was a really special touch. Music played in the background, and the staff helped to serve food and drinks.

For the first 45 minutes, which was perhaps a little too long, there was a supervised arts and craft session, which we had chosen, where children could make paper princess crowns at the table, or play with the toys. Tea followed: a variety of sandwiches (chosen by us); humous and carrots/cucumber, fruit; Pom Bear crisps; brownies and juice. Then came the cake and singing Happy Birthday! After that the staff entertained the children brilliantly, with songs, games (parachute, balloons, bubbles) and dancing. All the children loved it, especially Isabella who clearly enjoyed being centre of attention. It ended with them all giving her a hug!

Coffee and Crayons did work out quite expensive in the end, although not as much as some places. You could have even paid extra for an entertainer but especially at this age it really wasn’t necessary as the staff did such a great job. The parents were all able to relax and enjoy the party as well and we could leave the clearing up to someone else. I’d definitely recommend it.
